I agree with practise makes permanent. I learnt back in the days before You tube and didn't have lessons. The last few years I've been going back and retraining my gybes . It's hard if you've been doing something for 30 years and it's ingrained. Much easier to learn properly straight up.

Could you do some videos about things like which fin size to choose, RDM vs SDM masts, old second hand equipment, different sail types?. That would greatly help us garden variety windsurfers.

Great tips! I had 2 years off injured and my gybes went backwards. I've been trying to improve them, as well as get back up to speed, and one thing someone told me was I was doing the foot change too late. It really makes a difference doing it earlier. You're in a more stable position to adjust to things and deal with the rig flip. I like the not one style fits all approach idea too.

Nice to see the thrill of speed..😛 I sail Severne Turbo twin cams when I'm sailing freerace in chop. I like them in the gusty patchy wind but once it gets up you can't depower them like no cams. As I get older I might have to try the no cam NCX's..I'll still use the cammed sails in shallow flatwater speed sailing.

I feel better now. 😄.I sail freerace gear - a big sail on a smaller board and my average heart rate for a 1.30-2hr session can be 160-170bpm hitting 192..Good to hear Nils say going fast is more cardio. Sometimes I hardly have the energy to gybe when the heart is at 170+

Are you also applying foot mast pressure during the foot change?

Loved this. Is there a better month to visit vass in the year? I would love to plan a vacation next year but I want to do it when there is a higher chance of it being windy. Also, what is there to do there with my wife while not windsurfing? This may be on the walk along series, and if so I will check there.

There is very little xply, so lighter yes but longevity? Looks like a great sail. 😊

With the camera mount so close to the boom, you really have to duck to avoid hitting your head during a jibe. Do you think that is a good exercise for better jibing? I raise the camera above my head by attaching the Flymount to the sail mast sleeve which is not the best for rotating to view one side then the other… but it is not prone to head whacks due to lack of attention…

Heart rate 90-100 what the fuck... I record my windsurfing and my heart rate is near 140-160 most of the moments LMAO.

Curious to know how much wind you are in.

I tend to have trouble with the sail flip. I will carve nicely on the foil, but when I change my feet, I always splash down. I'll try keeping a foot back longer. That, and my sails need to pop with cams, so that makes the whole "on the foil" much trickier.

Great topic and nicely done. I'm always looking to improve on speed. The trouble with going straight downwind in my location is, if the wind is in the wrong direction or too light, I can't be sure how far I went without any watch. I can count out the seconds in my head for a fairly accurate nautical mile with a few landmarks going on a beam reach or close hauled pretty often though. The ideas about stickiness of the board and mast base farther back for speed are good. I tend to put the mast base in and then only change the boom height and harness line positions only, but maybe I'm missing out on a few knots there.

The biggest mistake I have seen when teaching a few of my friends indeed falling back going upwind, is to make sure they stay heading slightly downwind (as opposed to being already too close winded) and keep that heading as they move back towards the straps. (which your trex stance does exactly)

is it only me who doesnt care about speed but i worry more about jibess, taks and maybe in the future some jumps!

I check my windmeter daily now. When it's over 12, I find a way to get in the water. I use a 7.5 down to a 4.5 on my Foil board, and a wave board with any less.

Great podcast, going to watch it more and more. I also have a bit of feedback if you don't mind Cookie.. I think it would be easier on the eyes if you are both in one screen or if you both are equal of size in the screen. I've noticed my eyes and brain is having trouble figuring stuff out ;). It's like you have to watch 2 paintings at the same time. Just my 2 cents. :)

Top class explanation . I would upine that for 90 odd percent of windsurfers a carve would more than fit the bill . I have them all . 11 boards in total but the old dame carve 131 is my favorite. i suppose my age is a factor but comfort and control are key at whatever level youre at. If youre young fit and enthusiastic go for it . If not , buy a suite of new fins and new footstraps for your mistress and youll be rewarded . The quality of fins nowadays is staggeringly good but get advice from an expert so you get a fin compatible with the character of the board.

To become faster I think the best advice is to use the gps. Because often when you are really pushing on the edge and it feels super fast, is not when you are going the fastest. Only with the gps do you see that it was the relatively smooth run that was the fastest.

About getting back upwind after shooting downwind. Imagine being at a gusty smallish lake. Then you shoot downwind for about a minute, and try to go upwind for an hour. This is what it feels for me, would you agree?
